Episode Transcription

Dear artists, everyone has their fear. I have so much fear, every single day. I have fear preparing and leading these workshops each month. Something that impresses me so much about artists is your willingness to be vulnerable. Making your work and putting it in the world requires great vulnerability, which can make a person afraid. Of course that’s scary. Showing your deep interior, the thoughts, the feelings, the ideas, the utterances of your soul with friends, other artists, the public, or even scarier, with the internet? Some days that may seem truly terrifying. So the fact that you transcend these fears by first making the work and then sharing it with others impresses me endlessly. And I hope it impresses you. I want you to impress yourself. The person I hope you can impress is you at 85 years old. The other person I want you to impress is you at 14 years old. You have to be incredible to impress your 14 year old self! For this month’s workshop, I’ll ask you to identify, consider, and invite in your fears so that you can learn ways to navigate your practice despite or even alongside the fears. Remember, your fears aren’t something you have to conquer or vanquish. They’re just a part of you to recognize, learn about with a sense of curiosity, and discover ways of working alongside.
